Obituary

Leonard Douglas "Doug" Brannom Jr. passed away February 9, 2022 at the age of 77, surrounded by his family in Murfreesboro, TN. His battle with serious medical issues in recent years showed his courage in facing life’s challenges with a smile.

Born March 31, 1944 to Leonard Douglas Brannom, Sr. and Dorothy (Stinson) Brannom, Doug spent his formative years in Madison, TN along with his brother, Mike Brannom (Dianne) and sister, Susie Christian. He graduated from Madison High School in 1962, and attended Tennessee Tech University until traveling cross-country, and eventually joining the Alaska Army National Guard. His love of travel persisted throughout his life. Upon his return to the Nashville area, SSG Brannom honorably completed twelve years of service to his country.

A proud father to Trey Brannom (Ashley) of Murfreesboro, and Mary Beth Best (Billy) of Mt. Eagle; grandfather to Logan Brannom (Kayla) of Manchester, Ty Best (Courtney) of Morrison, Payton Brannom (Aubrey) of Milan, Brooks Best of Nashville, and Riley Brannom of Murfreesboro; great-grandfather to Aubrey and Nellie Brannom; and beloved uncle to Lorie Brannom of Knoxville and Bria Slaughter of Gallatin, and their families. The love he possessed for his family was abundantly apparent in his willingness to “show-up.” Doug could often be found coaching or cheering along at little league/high school/college football, baseball, rugby, and most recently, pee-wee hockey games. He was a scout for life and devout supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. He served as Scoutmaster for Troop 254 in Madison, where he earned several awards while volunteering. Doug was always ready to celebrate a birthday, wedding, homecoming, or any event in support of those he loved.

A loving husband, Doug was married to Brenda Martin Brannom on May 21, 2002 in a ceremony at Niagara Falls in New York. The pair traveled and went on many adventures together throughout their 18 years of marriage.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, and by his wife.

A master mechanic, Doug had a love for all things Jeep and International, which he shared with his father. The two started and ran Truck Sales Company on Dickerson Road in Nashville. Doug spent much of his time at “the shop.” He was well-known in the community for his warmth and willingness to lend an ear to those in need. In his “spare-time” Doug was the parts manager for, and ultimately retired from, Kyle International.

Doug was a man of many interests; chief among them was a life-long love of learning for the Lord. He always belonged to a place of worship. Doug grew up at Neely’s Bend United Methodist Church in Madison. Doug and Brenda later joined and became longtime members of Cooks UMC in Mt. Juliet. After relocating to Murfreesboro last year, he was welcomed in attending St. Patrick’s Anglican Church. Doug loved the outdoors, collecting, photography, reading, story telling, and all of God’s creatures. He found one of his favorite hobbies in judging BBQ competitions in his travels with Brenda. He rose to the rank of Master Judge and was invited to judge prestigious international events. Doug had a passion for service with the TN Jaycees. He served as a member of the Madison-Inglewood Chapter, State President in 1978, and long-time Dixie Advisor. Later, he became active in the TN JCI Senate, rising to State President. He was also elected Supreme Commander of the TN Volunteer Corp. Doug loved and helped found Camp Discovery located in Gainesboro, TN.

Doug was a gentle, kind, and loving man. The grief left by his earthly absence can only be eased by the memories and love he gave to those blessed to have known him.
