Obituary

Emma Jean Flowers, PhD (1923 - 2014) Nashville, TN Age 91 March 7, 2014 Dr. Flowers was born in Columbia, Tennessee on the 18th of November, 1923 to Elbert and Edna Hyde Flowers. The family soon moved to Nashville where Emma attended West High School and earned her Bachelor of Science degree at Peabody College. In the following years, she earned a Master of Science and an Education Specialist Degree from the University of Tennessee - Knoxville, plus a Doctorate of Education from Vanderbilt -Peabody. Dr. Flowers was a retired educator, having taught 30 years in the Metro-Nashville Public School System. After teaching at DuPont High School, Madison High School, Neely's Bend Junior High and Randalls' Learning Center, Dr. Flowers taught at the University of Tennessee - Nashville and Tennessee State University. Through all those years, she was a staunch supporter of Metro - Nashville Education Association. Community organizations included, Phi Delta Kappa and a member of the Church of Christ. In spring, her year was a mecca of hyacinths, snow drops, crocus, and daffodils. She had a heart for cats and all wildlife creatures that frequented her yard. Dr. Flowers is preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Walter Eugene Flowers and sister, Irene Flowers Stanton. She is survived by her brothers, Elbert Conner Flowers of Farmington, North Carolina and Harry Ritter Flowers of Indianapolis, Indiana. Visitation will be held on Sunday, the 9th of March, 2014 from two until five o'clock at Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home. Private Graveside will be conducted on Monday.
