Obituary

Jason (Jai) Enoch Flynt, 82, passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at his home in Madison, Tennessee, surrounded by his family. He was born September 17, 1940 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to the late William Lewis Flynt, Jr and Anna Aurelia Anderson Flynt. In addition to his parents, Jai was preceded in death by his brother, William Lewis Flynt III. He is survived by his sister Anna Lucy Brooks; his former wife Margie Bomar Flynt Osborne, and their children Jason Derek Flynt, Erica Nicole Flynt Corbitt (Josh), and Christopher Ryan Flynt; grandchildren Oliver Stephen Ticaric, Sydney (Alice) Flynt Ticaric, and Milo Jason Eliot Corbitt; nieces Leeanne Schulz (Ralph), Joy Johnson, and Michelle Dalton (Clinton); nephews Douglas Brooks and Mark Brooks. Jai graduated from high school in 1958 from Chattanooga High School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He went on to Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tennessee, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education. He attained his masters degree in education from Cumberland University. He had 40 years of service as Tennessee Public Schools’ band director, including Lebanon High School and Junior High, Jackson High School and Junior High, Cumberland High School and Junior High, Madison High School, Neely’s Bend Middle and Elementary Schools, Stratton Elementary, Amqui Elementary, Jere Baxter Middle School, and DuPont Elementary. Jai loved playing music and performing. He served as trombonist in the following: Music City Dixieland Band, The Moonlighters, The Jazz Alliance, The Usual Suspects, Radio Daze Big Band, Main Street Big Band, Bone Therapy, TN Tech Troubadours Alumni Band, and Jackson (TN) Symphony Orchestra. He was also leader of the Tech Troubadours for 2 years, while in college. He was in numerous professional organizations, including WTSBOA, MTSBOA, MENC, NEA, TEA, MNEA, ITA, and Chattanooga Musicians Union. Honorary fraternities include Pi Mu Sigma and Phi Mu Alpha. He served as adjudicator in music festivals, and was a staff member in high school and middle school band camps. Jai was a family man, enjoyed going camping and to his childrens’ activities and functions. He touched many lives over the years, and was well-loved by his students and his cohorts. Jai enjoyed writing and had a wonderful sense of humor. Visitation shall be on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at 11am, followed by a celebration of life funeral service at 12pm, conducted by Terry McNatt at Spring Hill Funeral Home in Nashville, Tennessee.
