Obituary

KENNEDY, Nelda June Nashville, TN -- Age 72 November 25, 2003. Born April 18, 1931, daughter of Louise Hicks Kennedy and Bernard Lee Kennedy. Graduate of Isaac Litton High School Class of 1949. Earned her Bachelor of Arts in English, George Peabody College for Teachers in 1953. Awarded the Master of Arts degree from George Peabody College for Teachers. Employed by Davidson County Public Schools, September 1, 1953, serving as sixth grade teacher at Stratton School from 1953-1956. In 1956, she transfenred to Madison High School where she served as an English teacher for 30 years. She retired from Madison and from the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools on June 4, 1986. Her retirement coincided with Madison High's closing as a senior high school. At Madison, she sponsored the National Honor Society and taught advanced placement English for many years. In 2002, she was honored at a Madison High reunion as an Outstanding Faculty Member. She was a member of the Metropolitan Nashville Education Association. In 1974, Miss Kennedy was elected president-elect of the Metro Nashville Education Association and served as MNEA president 1975-1976. She served on numerous MNEA committees, including the Budget Committee, the Professional Rights and Responsibilities Committee, and the Membership Committee. Ms. Kennedy served as a delegate to the representative assemblies of both the Tennessee Education Association and the National Education Association for many years. Following her retirement from the Metro Nashville public schools, she served as President of the Metro Nashville Retired Teachers Association. She was president of the Middle Tennessee Retired Teachers Association and in 1995-1996 served as president of Tennessee Retired Teachers Association. Ms. Kennedy was, at the time of her death, a lifetime member of NEA-Retired and a member of NEW - Retired, and a member of the Metro Insurance Trust, representing retired teachers. She served on the Board of Directors of Metro Center Retired Teachers Association. A life long Democrat, she was active in the Davidson County Democratic Women. She was also a member of the Women's Club of Nashville, Southminster Presbyterian Church, and Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary education sorority. Ms. Kennedy is survived by two aunts, Alice Phillips and Willie Frank Johnson and several cousins. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Metro Nashville Retired Teachers Association, Nashville, TN.
