Steve was born and raised in the Nashville area. He attended Madison High School where he excelled at sports, receiving a scholarship to play baseball at David Lipscomb University. He later attended the University of Tennessee Knoxville where he received a degree in biology. He pursued a career in public education, serving the Nashville public schools for 32 years. He taught biology and sciences at Litton and Stratford high schools and coached baseball, football, and track. Steve received his Masters Degree from TSU and his Plus 30 degree from Cumberland University. He moved to administration and was named Director of Personnel for Metro Nashville Public Schools Transportation Services, retiring in 2005. After retirement, he did what he loved most, spending time with his family and friends. He worked with both his sons in the construction and lawn care industries, guiding them in becoming productive and successful individuals. He served his church with activities on various committees, mission trips and by singing in the choir. Steve's primary focus was always his family. He loved to spend time with his wife, sons, and grandchildren, who called him Poppy.

Steve's quick wit and humor had a way of drawing people to him. He loved talking about the University of Tennessee, especially UT sports. He enjoyed going on trips with Cathy and tolerated her trips to the Smoky Mountains. His beloved family takes great comfort in knowing that he is in Heaven with his Savior Jesus Christ and they will ultimately see him again. "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death..." "I will fear no evil; For You are with me." (Psalm 23:4)
